Long-delayed Aldi will finally open in Buckeye on Thursday

BUCKEYE, AZ — After a years-long delay, the Aldi Grocery Store in Buckeye, Arizona will finally open its doors on Thursday, February 10.

The discount grocery store will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 1361 S. Watson Road, near Watson Road and Yuma Road. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 7:55 a.m.

News of Aldi’s plans to open Buckeye made headlines in 2018 and at the time, the Buckeye store was to be the first store to open in the Phoenix market. However, this opening was continually delayed, and eventually stores opened in Chandler, Gilbert, Goodyear, Laveen, Peoria, and Queen Creek.

Thursday’s opening will mark Aldi’s seventh store in the market.

Compared to other grocery stores, Aldi sees itself as a discount grocer and keeps costs low by relying mostly on generic/house brand products, asks customers to provide their own bags and wrap their own products groceries, and requires a $0.25 deposit for shopping carts so they don’t have to hire people to pick up the carts from the parking lot (quarter is returned when customers bring the cart back to the corral) .

Other than that, Aldi carries all the basics one would find in a traditional grocery store, including fruits and vegetables, various ready-to-cook frozen meats and foods, cheese and milk, crackers, cookies, snacks, juices and sodas.

Not everything is generic brands; there are a few branded items on the shelves, including Coke and Gatorade.

Aldi also began construction of another store in Phoenix near 14th Street and Bell Road. The building itself is in place, as well as Aldi signage, however, Aldi did not respond to requests for the timing of this specific store.

Over the years, Aldi has filed applications and permits for additional stores in Scottsdale and Tempe. But, Aldi has not announced or confirmed details regarding these locations. ABC15 has contacted Aldi to request updates on future locations.

Aldi is also reportedly planning to build a distribution center in Goodyear. However, no update has been announced or released on the status of this project.
