Swarthmore Public Library Presents Charles Dickens Program

The Swarthmore Public Library will present the program “Charles Dickens, Scrooge and“ A Christmas Carol ”” from 7 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, December 15th.

Dickens was one of the greatest and most popular English novelists of the 19th century, and even today he remains universally regarded as “the man who invented Christmas”. For many, his literary characters are as real today as they are when they were written, especially Ebenezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim.
Dickens’ own life was a true story of rags to riches – from the shame and misery of debt and humiliation in Victorian London to international literary success, wealth and worldwide fame. His reality is reflected in the life of his famous literary creations. Let’s sit by the fireside this holiday season as Dr. Covington himself becomes the “Master of Holiday Joy”.

Covington is the Creative Director of Performances Par Excellence, bringing history to life with vivid first-person biographies and educational and entertaining programming. A highly competent and experienced cultural historian and classically trained theater actor, he is an endearing artist. To register for the virtual presentation, call the library at 610-543-0436.

For the kids, Mr. Scott will be hosting a special outdoor story hour featuring hot chocolate at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 18. Children can also come to the library at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21 to make a beaded snowflake. No registration necessary. For more information about the library, visit http://swarthmorepubliclibrary.org.
