- Smith’s second PGA Tour win of the year is the biggest of his career, winning the tournament referred to by many as golf’s fifth unofficial major. Smith’s corner play was again key, his recovery from the 72nd fairway minimizing the damage of finding the water at the last. The first player to win with Titleist’s latest Vokey SM9 wedges, the Queenslander uses fairly low bounce options throughout four wedges he honed at the TPC Sawgrass practice areas where he regularly works on his game.
It was Smith’s putt that was key throughout the week at The Players, where he became the fifth Australian to win the title alongside Jason Day, Adam Scott, Steve Elkington and Greg Norman. The 28-year-old uses a Scotty Cameron-designed blade which features a small angled neck helping to create more than one arc shot which led to 42 putts during the week.
Smith’s victory is the seventh of nine PGA Tour events in 2022 for Titleist golf balls. The brand also won the PGA Tour of Australasia and the LPGA Tour this week.
