Women’s basketball to host Murray State on Friday


CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Chattanooga Mocs will host Murray State on Friday night at McKenzie Arena for non-conference women’s basketball action.


This will be the fifth meeting between the Mocs and the Racers. The last meeting was held over ten years ago in 2007 in Chattanooga. The Mocs lead the series 3-1 and are 2-0 at home. The first reunion was an on-site neutral game in 1977 at the MTSU Invitational. It will be 10 years before the two meet again in 1987, Murray State winning the meeting on their own ground. Chattanooga won the following year, then it took 19 years before they met again.


The Mocs have held off against Tennessee State in a late rally Wednesday night in Nashville and are looking to string together two wins this season. Murray State will be the Mocs’ fourth consecutive Ohio Valley Conference opponent this season. UTC is 1-2 overall, falling to Belmont in Game 1 and then Tennessee Tech in its first road competition.

Corneille Abbey leads the Mocs with 12.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. Dena jarrells has the team’s 15 best assists and five 3-pointers and is second on the team with 12.0 points per game after dominating UTC in each of the last two games. Brooke Hampel is Chattanooga’s third player in double digits with 10.0 points per game.


The Racers are 2-1 on the year with home wins over Asbury (79-40) and Cumberlands (94-56) and a road loss to Missouri. MSU is averaging 81.0 points per game and a shooting percentage of 47.6.

Katelyn Young leads the team with 21.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Macey Turley has the team’s 12 best scorers and is the team’s second scorer with 18.7 points per game. Hannah McKay is the third in double digits with 13.7 points per game and a 7.0 rebound average. Alexis Burpo is second in rebounds with 7.3 per game.
