For the current eighth-grade class at New Paltz Middle School, the last “normal” school year was fifth grade. Every step of their college experience has been disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
These students were asked to complete all typical sixth, seventh and eighth grade academic requirements while being denied most socio-emotional opportunities and rites of passage – sports, social events, field trips, co-recs , performances and clubs – which are so important for growth, development and overall mental health at this age.
Although many activities are slowly returning, it will never make up for the memories, opportunities, and traditions of middle school that the class missed. Before these kids turn high school, the middle school PTA coordinates a memorable social event for them – the Eighth Grade Spring Fling on Friday, May 13 at Novella’s in New Paltz. We hope this will give students a chance to be with their friends during this time of transition, celebrate their unique middle school experience, and strengthen their bond as a class.
Organizers are asking businesses and community professionals to join us in this endeavor by donating items to be included in “goody bags” that will be distributed to all students attending the Spring Fling, approximately 120 to 150 children. Examples of items are: a voucher for an item from your store or restaurant, a coupon for a purchase, stickers, pens/pencils, or something small and special from your business.
