As fashion consumers increasingly turn to suitability, they are looking for smarter ways to shop. We turn to thrift, brick-and-mortar, and online retailers like eBay to find those designer pieces and luxury handbags of yesteryear that can refresh our wardrobes without contributing to the ever-growing problem of fast fashion.

Today, eBay Australia announced the extension of its authenticity guarantee service to used and new luxury handbags listed above $350. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee aims to give Australians peace of mind when shopping for men’s and women’s luxury handbags from 16 designer brands, including Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada.

According to Brooke Eichhorn, Head of Luxury at eBay Australia “A handbag is listed every two minutes on and Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada among our top brands bought, luxury handbags have never been in more demand, whether it’s an investment purchase or the search for a rare vintage find. The biggest trend we’re seeing is a year 2000 resurgence, along with double-digit growth for brands like Fendi, Gucci and Saint Laurent over the past two years.

“We are also seeing an increasing number of Australians investing in luxury handbags which are seeing their value increase over time, and they are quickly becoming an asset class in their own right! eBay data shows the value of classic bags such as the Hermes Birkin, Dior bags and Chanel Quilted bags have risen dramatically in recent years, with a rare Hermes Birkin selling for US$98,000 (about AUD$136,000).

Once purchased, they are expertly verified at eBay’s Sydney authentication facility – currently at no additional cost to either buyer or seller. Once verified as authentic, each handbag receives a unique authentication card with detailed item information.

Will you be charged for the authenticity guarantee?
