How To Take Care Of Your Leather Bags With What You Have At Home, Lifestyle News

A leather conditioner is essential for cleaning your leather bags. However, given the current circumstances (with many stores remaining closed), getting one to take care of your leather bags can be a problem.

Here we show you how you can make your own leather conditioner using what you have at home.

PS These methods are suitable for calfskin, goat, lamb and vegan leather bags. If you are not sure, do a spot test first to make sure the DIY products are safe on your bags.

1. Natural baby shampoo

As alcohol can damage leather, its absence in baby shampoos makes it a great product to condition your bags.

What you will need: 1 tablespoon of baby shampoo, 4 cups of water, 2 drops of clear vinegar

Preparation: Mix the three ingredients well. Dampen a clean, dry cloth with the mixture and use it to wipe the surface of the leather bag. Let it air dry before putting it away.

2. Essential oils

In general, oils are great compounds for keeping your leather goods hydrated. However, experts recommend using essential oils rather than cooking oils (e.g. olive oil) as the latter could cause damage over time.

What you will need: Any essential oil except mint. Lemon is preferred for that fresh scent afterwards.

Preparation: Dampen a clean, dry cloth. Add 10 drops of essential oil to the cloth. Massage it on your leather bag.

3. Beeswax

Often found in lip balms, beeswax is ideal for cleaning leather while preventing it from cracking.

What you will need: ½ part beeswax, 2 tablespoons of cocoa butter, cup of almond oil

Preparation: Melt the beeswax and cocoa butter in a pan over medium heat. Stir the mixture constantly to prevent it from burning. Add almond oil once the two mixtures above have melted. Cool the mixture once everything is mixed. Once you can safely touch it, use a clean, dry cloth and apply some of the mixture to your leather bag.
