HWant to support local businesses when shopping for mom this Mother’s Day? Consider stopping by Jytte Designs’ first pop-up store on May 2. The Detroit-based, sustainable luxury leather brand sells its products at Coup d’Etat, and you can buy everything from handmade card holders and key chains to wallets and backpacks.
La Detroiter Juna Durrant launched Jytte Designs – named after her grandmother Jytte Ulrich – in December 2020. Durrant started sewing leather in 2014 when she made a bag for a friend who was getting married. Since then, she has learned hand-sewing techniques on her own and how to work with leather tools and lacing patterns. When Durrant lost her job during the pandemic, she decided to use her savings and stimulus check to finally pursue her dream of starting her own business.
The result is a range of over 12 leather goods ranging from $ 25 to $ 850. Popular bags include the June Moon Bag, a circular bag that can be worn over the shoulder; Lulu Clutch, an oversized clutch embellished with tassels; and Aurelia Bag, a bucket-style bag with tassels.
Sustainability is a priority for Durrant. To avoid overstocking, all of their products are made to order and hand-sewn – Durrant says Jytte Designs is the only Michigan luxury leather brand that does all of its stitching with this technique. They’re also made from high-quality materials, like full-grain leather and solid brass hardware, to ensure they’ll stand up season after season.
“Jytte Designs customers are very socially minded and aware that they are doing their part to reduce waste,” Durrant said in a press release. “Our handbags are not only hand sewn, but they are constructed with only the highest quality materials, meant to last you a lifetime.”
The pop-up store will be open from noon to 5 p.m. The pop-up store will be an exception to the bespoke Jytte Designs model and the products will be available for purchase on site. Coup d’Etat is located at 3044 W. Grand Boulevard. in the New Center neighborhood of Detroit.
“It was a joy to collaborate with new talents like Juna”, says Angela Wisniewski, owner of Coup d’Etat, in a press release. “Her designs and meticulous craftsmanship come together to give moms the ultimate, beautiful, unique gift that supports our Detroit designer community.”
